What's the plan?

Well, I suppose it will unfold as needed, but here's what Kelly and I think will happen:

1. First take care of the basics.

Take care of a few of the things our surveyor pointed out. The maintenance list on a boat is always long, so we will need to create a plan.  More on this later.

2.  Sail the boat as much as we can on the Chesapeake.

Sail Iolair in all kinds of weather, short trips, multi-day trips, at night and during the day.

3. Update Iolair slowly based on what we learn.

We knew going in -- a 30 year-old boat would need upgrades. The hull and design is what we wanted. Someone called Iolair a platform for our adventures. We can build her out as wanted.  On the other hand, if we want to, Iolair is basically ready to go. It is easy to be dazzled by shiny new things and electronics, but it is a dangerous trap as well. We'll start with the basics, and get to the alternative energy and state of art electronics later - but only as needed.

4. 5-6 years downstream?

With the boys in college and good jobs to help with the college expenses, there is no rush. The Chesapeake and East Coast of the US will give us several seasons to refine our cruising skills, and learn about every hose, wire, and bolt on the boat. We can learn her sailing characteristics, and all the good and bad.
