Peat Moss March, St. John's - Antigua

Sitting in Deep Bay, Kel realized that our dear family friend, Thunder Hole, needed a little attention.  Thunder Hole is our state of the art composting toilet. She realized that Zac, Chris, and the Campbells would all be spending some time on Iolair with us over the coming months, and Thunder Hole would be put to the test.  We know he’s up to it, but not without one essential ingredient - Peat Moss. The last time we bought Peat Moss we were in Rockland, Maine. We sat on the bench in the wind and loaded up enough zip lock bags to fill Thunder for 3 months. Now it looks like we’ll run out while the family is visiting us on Iolair, and that just can’t be.

So she scoured the island of Antigua, asking in stores, making calls, until she finally found a home and garden center in St. John’s that had some nice, organic Canadian peat moss sitting on a pallet.  We pulled up the anchor and took the boat to the city, anchored close to the cruise ship terminal, jumped in the dingy, and went to town with our bags and a backpack. After a two mile hike across town, we purchased three large heavy bags of premium moss. Returning to the boat, we walked through the back neighborhoods and the locals must have had a laugh. We usually get a lot of stares in the back streets, but this was special. Two gringos in the rain, stopping every few hundred yards to rest our hands and shoulders, hauling 3 cubic yards of peat down the middle of a crowded street. Everyone is outside in St. Johns, and the streets were packed with cars, vendors, and town folk selling nearly everything… with the exception of Peat Moss.

After a rest at a bar, we finally piled the bags high in the dingy and made it back to Iolair.  Kel always seems to find places to stash things on the boat, so now Thunder Hole will be happy for another 3 months.  Thunder is truly a remarkable toilet, worth every peat moss march we’ve made. I know there will be more. By sunset, Iolair was back in a remote little harbor.
