Up to Juneau
After an overnight in Tracy Arm Cove, we left for the 2 day trip to Juneau. With the wind at our back, and the current in our favor, we made great time. Good thing too, as the rain was also at our back, and we all take a little soaking when it is blowing into the back of the cockpit. Pretty uneventful day, and we pulled into a place to sleep about 30 miles from Juneau. Taku Harbor has a long-abandoned salmon cannery. Some of the old piers and houses are still there.
We left with the low tide the next day. We can't actually take Iolair into the harbors in Juneau. There is a bridge (for these things called cars) that our boat cannot pass under. Instead, we went around Douglas Island to a little town called Auk Bay. Kelly had arranged for a car so we can get around and drive the 12 miles down to Juneau. The glacier and mountains behind Stattor Harbor in Auk Bay will take your breath away. We arrived on a blue-sky day and then outlasted three days of rain for another blue-sky day. We keep busy on the rain days doing boat chores. Today, we hiked seven miles up the West Glacier Trail to the Mendenhall Glacier.
