Hakai Institute - Calvert Island, BC

We sailed into a big pod of humpbacks.  They all seemed to be in the deepest part of the sound, so we kept moving along the shoreline.  Two massive whales surfaced about 200 feet in front of us.  We shifted into neutral and drifted along.  The whales turned to go around us and we sat there in awe.  Looked right at their crusty blowholes as they gracefully swam by. Once past us, they dove and showed us their tails. The trailing edge of the tail is like a unique fingerprint. We should be able to ID them in the database.
In another hour we were at the Hakai Institute on Calvert Island. Scientists here study the raincoast ecosystem, and focus on human interactions, education, and climate change.  Jay - "Best beaches I've ever seen." We had a couple of fun happy hours with some new friends, Phil and Vicki on the "Arctic Tern." Hard to describe this place so I'll let the pictures take over. I will say, "there is more natural magic and beauty here than your imagination can handle." Unforgettable. We never saw or heard the sea wolves, maybe next time.
