Maggie's Point, Berry Island

Left Port McNeil in dense fog this morning. Visibility was about a 100 yards- occasionally. Used the radar for several hours to keep track of fishing boats, ferries, and sailboats. Fog cleared out about noon. Current was running strong in some of the cuts and Iolair crawled through at 1.5 knots. Worked our way through some spectacular islands into BlackFish Sound. Eagle-Eye (Kelly) spotted the first humpback. We sailed along and watched several whales the size of our boat blowing water and air straight up. After a few breaths, they would arch and dive showing us their large tail flukes. Kelly got some video. Always humbled by the animals who share this planet with us. Just Iolair, 100’s of little islands, a 500 foot deep ocean, and whales on all sides. Now the only boat anchored in a great little spot. It’s also a local sea-kayaking base camp. They are dropped here in the Broughtons and picked up after a week of touring. With this sunny weather we are not likely to move far for a few days.
