Majabigwaduce

This is a strange northern land.  I'd never even heard of the Tarrantine Abenaki Indians. They called this place Majabigwaduce, but it's been called Castine since 1613.  It's just a sleepy little town now on the Bagaduce River.  It was so quiet here Kelly and I whispered as we walked around, but that's not how Castine has always been.

If you like strange words and colonial history, Castine is your kind of place.  Just check out the Castine wikipedia page. Here's my summary:

Strange words
  • Modockawando
  • Pidiwammiskwa
  • Majorbigwaduce
  • Bagaduce

History
  • maybe the oldest permanent settlement in New England
  • battle line for 4 colonial powers: the French, Dutch, British, and Americans between 1613 and 1794
  • the greatest American naval defeat until Pearl Harbor (the American Penobscot Expedition lost 474 men, and 26 ships; the British lost only 24 men defending the fort)

We picked up a mooring ball just off Eaton's Boat Yard and went for a long hike north of town. I think I will call Kel "majorbigwaduce" because she can pull off a "modockawando" move when bringing Iolair into the "Bagaduce" River.
